Then in July, Paul Goydos becomes only the fourth man in PGA Tour history to shoot a 59 while at the John Deere Classic. Both rounds were historic, but neither could match what 17 year-old Bobby Wyatt accomplished last week at the Country Club of Mobile, Alabama.

Wyatt posted a record 14-under 57 on Wednesday in the second round of the AGA State Boys Junior Championship. Attending the University of Alabama in the fall, Wyatt shot a 26 on the front nine, which included an eagle, seven birdies and a par. He just missed finishing with a birdie on the 18th, settling for a par.

It’s possible Wyatt’s score could set a world record as the lowest score in competitive play on a golf course of more than 6,500 yards, which the Guinness Book of World Records uses as the standard. The course as played by Wyatt measured 6,643 yards.

Earlier this year, PGA Tour Professional Briny Baird hit golf balls off the roof of the Omni San Diego Hotel into nearby Petco Park. A target was set up in right field, and he hit it with 8 of 10 shots, earning free lettuce wraps at PF Changs for everyone in America. The shot was quite impressive considering it was from 375 feet up and over 230 yards away. P.F. Changs also made a $25,000 donation to the San Diego Navy/Marine Corps Relief Society.

With that title comes fame and fortune unlike anything he’s ever experienced. However, unlike many players, Oosthuizen’s first major purchase is staying close to his roots.

“I bought the tractor for my farm. Being a farm boy it was one of my big dreams. “I’ll have a kiddie seat on it for my daughter Jana,” the 27-year-old South African told reporters in Sweden on Wednesday, on the eve of the Scandinavian Masters at the Bro Hof Slott course near Stockholm.

Oosthuizen, who won at St Andrews by seven strokes, also enjoyed another concession to his new-found fame and riches. “Flying in this morning by private jet… It’s all starting to sink in,” he said.

One such project is the Button Hole Short Course and Teaching Center which has proven to be one of the most successful initiatives in golf.

Located in Rhode Island, this former 26-acre gravel pit on the Providence-Johnston line was launched as part of the “For the Good of the Game” program sponsored by the U.S. Golf Association. When the course celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this summer, it could point to its most obvious successes.

Three of the best teenagers in the state these days –– Samantha Morrell, Juliet Vongphoumy and Jamison Randall –– are Button Hole products. They learned the game at the course and now are piling up high school, college, AJGA, USGA and Junior PGA honors. All have bright futures in the game.

“I think we’re still growing as a community resource,” said David Hanna, Button Hole’s executive director. “We’ve certainly turned the corner with the school systems and the community agencies. We’re still reaching out.”

For the people at Button Hole, having such successful representatives is merely a bonus. The goal behind the program extends far beyond producing champions.

“We teach life lessons,” Hanna said. “We provide an opportunity for youngsters to learn the core values that are part of golf.”

You’re faced with a golf pitch shot about 15 or 20 yards in front of the green. It’s this type of shot in which you need options if you’re going to get up and down consistently. Here are three types of shots that you can use to your advantage – a low shot, a medium shot or a high, soft flop shot.

When setting up for a low trajectory pitch shot, a very important thing to understand is the shaft angle needs to be set forward and stay in that position through impact. You’ll also want to move a little closer to the golf ball, so the ball releases quickly towards the hole. The keys here are to keep the golf club shaft angle forward at impact, get closer to the golf ball and then set the golf ball a little back of middle in your stance.

Another fundamental to remember with all three of these shots is to hit down on the golf ball. Many golfers mistakenly try and lift the golf ball in the air resulting in a chunky shot or a thin one that releases all the way across the green.

Make sure you set up with the shaft angle forward at address so you can return to that shaft angle at impact. Get closer to the golf ball, hit down into the golf ball and you’ll produce a low running shot.

With the medium pitch shot, we’re going to set up with ball in the middle of our stance, the shaft angle is going to be straight up from the golf ball and we’re also going to be our usual distance from the golf ball. This golf swing is a short, descending blow that will fly towards the green with a little more loft and a little less release. This is probably the most consistent pitch shot to hit and should be your first choice around the greens if possible.

The final pitch shot is a soft, high shot or “flop” shot. This is the shot that everyone loves to hit, but it’s also the hardest and most difficult shot to repeat.

Setting up to a flop shot, you’ll need to open the clubface and move farther away from the golf ball. Since we move closer to the golf ball for the lower running shot, we’re going step a couple balls back away from your normal stance for this high-loft shot. Also, remember to aim your clubface where you want the golf ball to go first then set your body around that position.

For this golf shot, you’ll want your clubface aimed to the target but your stance will be open approximately 15-20 degrees. This shot requires a bit longer golf swing, right along your body line. A bigger swing with an open club face will launch the ball high and will also limit how far the ball releases after impact.

With all three of these shots, remember to hit down into the golf ball, there’s no scooping allowed. Also, be sure to survey the situation before you decide which of these golf shots to hit. There is definitely some risk/reward involved in this decision that could have a huge impact on your success.

PGA Professional and Director of Golf at Mistwood Golf Club in Romeoville, IL.

Golf itself can be a very frustrating sport. The thing is, we try and be perfect at a sport that is imperfect. For one thing, the surface that we are playing on is grass. It’s beautiful and it’s maintained, as all golf courses are, especially now. The grass is inconsistent. A putting green does have bumps on it. You can land in a little ball mark in a fairway and you might not even know it. So you have to take that for granted. Even the best players in the world are going to hit some bad shots.

I know that the best players in the world are not constantly in the middle of changing things. They really are trying to keep their focus on just one, maybe two things throughout the round. For a Tour pro, it may be a feeling of timing. For the rest of us, timing would be great; but normally we need some, or just maybe one, mechanical thought to bring us in there.

That takes work. It takes a few rounds of golf; going out on the golf course and just literally thinking one thing.

Let’s say, as a thought, I need to turn my shoulders. Well, as you are going through the round of golf, once you hit a bad shot, the first inclination is to think, “Well, maybe it’s my hands; maybe it’s my knee, maybe it’s this; or maybe it’s that.” You really have to stay away from that and just concentrate on that one thing that you brought on the golf course. Which, let’s say its turn your shoulders; so with every shot that you take, the only thought that you can have would be, “For every swing, I’m going to turn my shoulders.” At the end of the round, the swing will normally come and find you.

If it really doesn’t, if you are just having a bad day; at least you can chalk that up to maybe a swing thought that just wasn’t the best for that day. Instead of going through a myriad of things and by the time you are done with the round you are just mentally drained and thinking that you’ve tried everything today and nothing works so I’m a really poor golfer.

It took a little longer than most golf experts predicted, but since Bubba Watson earned his first victory last month on the PGA Tour, he’s been making the most of it. A year after pledging to donate $50,000 to Caddy For A Cure, Inc. Bubba has honored his word.

Caddy For A Cure is a program that offers an auction-style charity format to caddy for the world’s best golfers. Said Watson”I don’t like people caddying for me, but I told Russ at Caddy For a Cure, that if I ever won on TOUR, I would announce on national television that I am donating $50,000 to CFAC.”

“Our program offers golf fans opportunities with the best players in the world and Bubba definitely fits into that group,” said Russ Holden, Caddy For A Cure Founder, CEO and former PGA TOUR caddie. “Although someone didn’t get the opportunity to spend a day with Bubba inside the ropes as a caddie, everyone can get a feel for what a great guy he is, not only as a golfer, but through his integrity and commitment to help others.” he continued, “The timing of Bubba’s donation is perfect for supporting research into Fanconi anemia and its high connection with cancer, particularly given the issues Bubba’s family is facing with his father. Advances have been made in developing therapeutics for treating Fanconi anemia that show significant hope for potentially preventing cancer. We are truly grateful for the help from all players in supporting our cause, but Bubba Watson has taught us all a lesson in gratitude.”

Caddy For A Cure offers its caddie experiences from its website, www.caddyforacure.com, with auctions for each player. 100% of auction proceeds go to charity and caddie participation is fully tax deductible as allowed by law.

Be honest, who wouldn’t want a really cool golf car drive in style on the golf course? How about an amazing luxury golf car manufactured at the same factory that builds the Porsche Boxster and Cayman?

Introducing the Garia Luxury Golf Car that features a Formula 1 inspired front suspension, a drive train built by an Italian company that also produces Ducati gearboxes, and aluminum profiles made by the same company that supplies aluminum profiles to Aston Martin, Jaguar and Volvo. Available next month, The Garia LSV is fitted with street legal safety equipment such as seatbelts and side mirrors, and it also has a hydraulic brake system.

On and off the course, golf cars have become the new standard for convenient and green transportation. In fact, you could use your super cool Garia even after your round of golf.

With an estimated market share of over 70% by 2012 there is no doubt that smaller electrical vehicles also known as NEVs (neighborhood electric vehicles) or LSVs (low speed vehicles) are here to stay. Its small size makes it perfect for the city, and with tax-based incentives in many countries and an increasing number of states and countries that allow LSVs to be operated on roads with speed limits of 35 mph (50km/h) or less, LSVs no longer belong to the future market – they are the market.
