The Un-Invitational Shootout

Even after 16 years, it would be nearly impossible for anyone to have predicted the improbable outcome of the 2009 Invitational Shootout.
In a shocking upset, walk-on competitors Kevin "Hammer" Hyland and Dave Neill emerged victorious over a field of 90 golfers and shattered the all-time Shootout scoring record with an unprecedented score of 10-under par 62.
"I'm not sure how they found us" said Mike Howley. "But these guys just rewrote the record book with an amazing performance.
Hyland and Neill defeated 2007 Champions Dominic Dallio and George Les, who shot the second best score in Shootout history with an 8-under par 64. The previous record low score was 65 by Ray "The Predator" Shinkle and Jeff Fernstrom at the 2002 Invitational Shootout at Maple Meadows.

One of the featured matchups at the 2009 Invitational Shootout ended in a technical knockout as Ron Mouw and Mick McDonnell defeated younger brothers Ryan Mouw and Larry McDonnell by a surprising 11 strokes.
"Last year's tie with those guys bothered me all year long" said Mick McDonnell, who is also the Director of Future Planning for The Shootout. "I made a commitment to victory the day after The Shootout and we delivered on that promise this afternoon. Both Ron and I respect the heck out of those guys and think they're terrific competitors, but I don't ever want to lose to them."

Perserverance finally paid off in 2009 for veteran John Moirano, who won the Legends Division of The 2009 Invitational Shootout along with partner Dennis Cook. Moirano made his tournament debut in 2001 at Maple Meadows and has not missed an event since.
"It's hard to believe it took me nine attempts before I finally won, but this feels great" said Moirano. "Dennis hit some clutch shots down the stretch and we really stuck together as a team. I can't wait until next year!"
Renegade Hedges Rocks Shootout

Known in the past more for his preference for loud rock music on the golf course, Steve "Renegade" Hedges took a large step in distinguishing himself as an elite player at this year's event. Hedges and partner Ben Miller improved their 2008 performance by four strokes, finishing tied for fourth with a 3-under 69 at the 2009 Invitational Shootout.
"There are certainly some purists out there who can't stand the music coming from my golf cart, but I think Ben and I have proven you can play great golf and rock it out on the course" said Hedges. "This is just the start - look for big things from us in 2010!"
The Invitational Shootout is ALWAYS the first Saturday in June.
