Bill Clinton will be joining the PGA Tour. No, he won’t be playing on the Champions Tour, but his William J. Clinton Foundation will be partnering with Humana to co-sponsor the PGA Tour’s Humana Challenge, formerly known as the Bob Hope Classic, in La Quinta, California. The 2012 Humana Challenge, January 19-22, will feature a health-and-wellness conference to help publicize the benefits of healthy lifestyles.
Clinton, 65, has lost 25 pounds and eats a nearly vegan diet. “I just decided I wanted to hang around as long as I could,” he said. “My best year as a golfer was the first year I got out of the White House. I got down to a 10 handicap. But I’m not close to that now. I just don’t play enough,” said Clinton, citing global travel for his various causes.
The former President is hoping to promote healthy lifestyle options by linking health and golf. “If you ask somebody why has average driving distance gone up, they’ll say it’s the equipment that’s better. And that’s true. But I would argue far more than the equipment is how seriously these players take fitness. It’s a different world. They’re professional athletes in a different way,” he said.
