Michelle Wie just turned 22 years old and has been a professional golfer since she was 16. Back in 2005, much was expected of the golf prodigy who at age 10 became the youngest player to qualify for a USGA amateur championship.
Since that time, Wie has only two wins in her professional career, both of which occurred outside the United States. She won the 2009 Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Mexico and the CN Canadian Women’s Open in 2010.
Lately the six foot tall Wie has stood in the shadow of another 22-year-old, Yani Tseng of Taiwan. The 5’6″ tall Tseng has won 11 times on the LPGA Tour, including five major championships. This year Yani Tseng won both the LPGA Championship and the Women’s British Open along with being named LPGA Player of the Year.
This weekend Wie and Tseng are in Malasia for the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia tournament at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club. “It’s not been too good a year. I’ve not played as well as I would have liked to” said Wie. “But we are here and I’m ready to play. There are lots of challenges ahead and lots of tougher players and Yani seems to get stronger each week.”
