With 82 LPGA titles, including 13 major championships, Mickey Wright is a golf legend who’s been awarded with nearly every honor available. However, she just received what could be her greatest acknowledgement, a gallery in her honor at the United States Golf Association Museum in Bernards Township, New Jersey.
The Mickey Wright Room at the museum contains 200 artifacts from her career, including her set of 1963 Wilson Staff Dynapower golf clubs. The gallery is only the fourth honoring a player and Wright is the first female to receive the honor. Her display will join golf icons Ben Hogan, Bobby Jones and Arnold Palmer. The Mickey Wright Room at the United States Golf Association Museum is scheduled to open to the public on June 16.
Many golf professionals, including Ben Hogan, felt Wright possessed the greatest golf swing ever. She had incredible balance and swung with a smooth a rythmic tempo. Wright developed this tempo as a young girl growing up in San Diego, California. She attended Stanford University, but left early to join the LPGA Tour in 1955.
Wright was coached by Texas golf legend Harvey Penick. Her 82 victories are quite remarkable considering her early retirement at age 34 because of foot problems. She is still the only player in LPGA Tour history to hold all four major titles at the same time.
Among the 200 personal artifacts in Mickey Wright Room at the USGA Museum are some of her most precious possessions. The display includes Wright’s medals, trophies, awards, photographs, clothing and films from her career.
The USGA Museum is located at 77 Liberty Corner Road in Bernards Township, New Jersey, near the intersection of I-78 and I-287. The Museum is a 30-minute drive from Newark Liberty International Airport, and approximately 45 minutes from New York City.
